Circular Copenhagen startup sprouts not only in Denmark
“We want to create a circular alternative to the throwaway culture!” – Josefine Aspman, designer
In 2019 Josefine Aspman and Simon Wraae founded LETZLEATHER – an interior brand that uses only natural materials and has a strong passion for a sustainable business that can offer the customer an alternative to the throwaway culture.
LETZLEATHER’s products can be purchased via their webshop and in retailers in Denmark and Norway.
“We have just entered into a collaboration with a number of stores in Norway, which we are very proud of and excited about. We have wanted to be a part of the Norwegian market for a long time, but we had never dared to dream that it should happen so fast! The success is due to the Norwegians’ positive attitude towards sustainable materials, and the opportunity to be able to personalize their products. This motivates us and makes us believe that we can inspire to a more sustainable consumption.”

“It is interesting that we actually feel at least as well received in Norway as in Denmark. At the Oslo Design Fair, we experienced enormous interest in our brand. Norwegians love Danish design, and they know how to appreciate good craftsmanship. But the funniest thing was that they were so crazy about being allowed to take part in the design process. That is exactly what we want to pass on; the joy of designing your own interior!”

The story behind LETZLEATHER
He is from Bornholm, she is from North Zealand, they met in Copenhagen, and there they have let their creativity grow!
“Josefine has always been creative, as a child she spent many hours in her father’s workshop and sitting and tinkering with all sorts of things. Ever since I got to know her, she has designed and built her own furniture. ”

Therefore, it was no surprise that she did many things by herself, when she and Simon renovated the kitchen in their Copenhagen apartment. Josefine wanted leather handles but could not find any on the market with a sustainable story and a good enough design. Therefore she made her own, and that was the beginning of LETZLEATHER. Simon is a real entrepreneur and took action to found a business, while Josefine was allowed to unfold her creativity. This has resulted in an exclusive assortment of products made by leather and wood.
“I hope that I can be allowed to pass on the joy of “going to the workshop” and designing your own stuff. That is why we invite the customer into the process, by giving them the opportunity to choose colors, materials and combinations for the product. Moreover it is important that the story behind the product is good all the way, so that you can use the product in your home in good conscience. Therefore we strive to think about the environment in everything we do, and we are proud to be a part of transforming the furniture and interior design industry.”

As examples of LETZLEATHER’s struggle for a circular alternative, it can be mentioned that their hanger bars and toiletpaper holders are made from leftovers from the broomstick production at a local carpentry shop in West Zealand, while the leather they use for the hooks is deadstock from the furniture industry. All their products are designed and handmade in Denmark to ensure good conditions and high quality.
